Christopher Marlowe’s “Doctor Faustus”
Rating: 2.5/3. Marlowe’s play is the earliest dramatic representation of the Dr. Faustus legend. It’s a short and to-the-point portrayal that is very powerful. It only takes an hour or so to read, and I think it’s very worth the investment.
“The Death and Life of the Great American School System” by Diane Ravitch
Rating: 1.5/3. This book discusses how standardized testing and school choice are undermining the success of public education. While I thought the book had flaws, it still contains some fascinating information. I also list two other books on education that I think offer better value for your time.
“Revelation Space” trilogy by Alastair Reynolds
Rating: 2.5/3. Reynolds creates a lively and fascinating universe in this trilogy. There is a wide range of characters and some great threads of mystery with delicious denouements. Despite some minor editorial quibbles (particularly in the 2nd book), I highly recommend the series to sci-fi fans.
“The Prefect” by Alastair Reynolds
Rating: 2.5/3. This is a great whodunit with a very likable and believable lead character. It’s a sci-fi, but it’s really more about the characters. Even if you don’t love sci-fi generally, you will very probably find something here that will strike your fancy.
“House of Suns” by Alastair Reynolds
Rating: 2.5/3. This is a great sci-fi whodunit. Reynolds creates vivid and believable sci-fi universes *and* nuanced and believable characters. I recommend this book even if you don’t love sci-fi.
